Times picks chief technology officerBy Times staff writer © St. Petersburg Times, published February 1, 2001 ST. PETERSBURG -- Beth Sholar, a former executive of Thomson Newspapers, has been named chief technology officer for the St. Petersburg Times. Sholar will be responsible for the newspaper's corporate technology strategy and will lead the information technology and Web publishing departments, Times executive vice president Marty Petty said Wednesday. Sholar, 40, also will work with Times affiliates, including Florida Trend, Congressional Quarterly and Tampa Bay Newspapers, on technology and Web-related issues. Sholar's position is a new one at the Times, and she will report to Petty. "Beth had many choices at this stage of her career, but we're thrilled she chose the Times," Petty said. "Quite simply, she shares our passion for journalism and she sought a newspaper committed to its people and customers." Sholar has professional experience with newspaper systems, the Web and production. She most recently was vice president for information technology with Thomson Newspapers, where she held several executive posts since 1996. Sholar was responsible for all aspects of technology for the newspaper chain's 170 publications, including 55 daily newspapers, in the United States and Canada. In early 2000, Thomson announced it was selling its newspaper division. Previously, Sholar worked at the Morning Call in Allentown, Pa., and the Chicago Tribune. Sholar was born in Ohio and grew up in Chicago. A daughter of commercial printers, she earned a bachelor's degree in graphic design at the University of Illinois and is working on a master's in information systems. Sholar is married to Tom Shafer, a newspaper operations expert who recently formed a training company. © 2006 • All Rights Reserved • St. Petersburg Times
