Definitely a horror
The new splatter flick, Valentine, is a throwback to the bad ol' days when a holiday title, a cool mask and Karo syrup blood were the only requirements for making a horror movie. Jamie Blanks' movie isn't a remake of My Bloody Valentine (1981), but its heart is in the right place, dripping in some psycho's hands. The plot involves a college nerd previously humiliated by snobby coeds, now seeking revenge years later. He's sending threatening valentines and wearing a mask with "She loves me, she loves me not" written all over it. Should be an easy, cheap Halloween costume. David Boreanaz (TV's vampiric Angel), above with Marley Shelton, and Denise Richards (Wild Things) co-star. Warner Bros. hid this one from critics as long as it could, too late for Weekend review. No problem. The target audience for Valentine probably doesn't read.
Only in the movies
Head Over Heels is the next step in Freddie Prinze Jr.'s on-screen maturation from big man on high school and college campuses to a place in the professional world. That profession, however, may be as a hired killer. But he's so dreamy! Prinze plays Jim Winston, the man of Amanda Pierce's dreams except for evidence suggesting he's a murderer. Monica Potter (Con Air) plays Amanda, whose incredibly glamorous job under these circumstances is art restorer at New York City's Metropolitan Museum of Art. Plus, her improbably large Manhattan apartment is shared with four -- count 'em -- four supermodels. Only in America, you say? No, only in boy-meets-girl-and-overcomes-stupid-misunderstandings movies like this. Head Over Heels screened too late for Weekend. See Friday's Entertainment page for a review.
