PALM HARBOR -- Learn it for the first time or brush up on Florida's boating laws and safety practices at the next series of "Boat Smart" classes for sailors or power boaters.

Sponsored by the Anclote Key Sail and Power Squadron, the sessions will be from 7 to 9 p.m. for four Wednesdays in February including Wednesday, Feb. 14, 21 and 28 at Baywood Village clubhouse, 309 Westwinds Drive, Palm Harbor. There is a $15 textbook fee. If a family is taking the course together, they need only one book. Registration required. Call Chris Hagberg at 934-7500 or Jo Chapin at 938-0857.

Red Cross schedules tea dance at Harborview

CLEARWATER -- The North Pinellas branch of the Tampa Bay chapter, American Red Cross, will host its second annual holiday tea dance from noon to 4:30 p.m. Thursday at Harborview Center in downtown Clearwater.

Frank Parsons and the Royal Floridian Orchestra will entertain and ballroom dancers from the Fred Astaire Dance Studio will give an exhibition. Substantial hors d'oeuvres, coffee and tea will be served. Brendan McLaughlin, Channel 28 news anchor, is master of ceremonies. There will also be a bake sale and prizes.

Proceeds will help the Red Cross -- which is not a government agency -- provide such services as free transportation to medical appointments; teaching first aid, CPR and other health and safety courses; disaster relief services, international tracing and handling emergency communications between members of the armed forces and their families.

Tea dance tickets are $12 per person; $20 per couple. Table sponsorships are also available. To sign up, call 446-2358. Or, visit the North Pinellas branch's new offices, 2481 Sunset Point Road.

It's time to apply for Helping Hands grants

CLEARWATER -- For the 11th year, the GFWC Clearwater Junior Woman's Club will award Helping Hands Community Grants to area charitable organizations. The grants, for up to $2,500, are awarded in the areas of the arts, conservation, education, home life, international affairs and public affairs.
