Man attacks, robs woman in hospital
By PATRICK COOPER © St. Petersburg Times, published February 3, 2001 ST. PETERSBURG -- Police are searching for a man who robbed and attacked a female employee in an office area at St. Anthony's Hospital on Friday morning, and whose image was captured on video. The man demanded money from the victim and then choked her, making her pass out temporarily, police said. He also tried to remove her clothes. The attack occurred about 7:45 a.m. Another employee found the victim shortly after she had regained consciousness, police said, and the woman was admitted to the hospital. "Something like this has never happened in the hospital before, and of course we're taking it very seriously," hospital spokeswoman Lisa Patterson said. Despite being shaken, the victim was okay physically, Patterson said. The suspect was in the hospital more than 30 minutes before the attack, police said. He was seen on hospital security video. In a statement, Ford Kyes, St. Anthony's chief operating officer, said the hospital "will carefully review our security plan throughout the campus. Our top priority is, and always has been, the safety and security of our patients and team members." Patterson said hospital security already is on duty 24 hours a day, but another officer will be stationed by the normal employee entrance. Police are searching for a dark-skinned black man in his 30s or 40s, between 5 feet 6 and 5 feet 11 and weighing about 200 pounds. He has no facial hair.
