Bulls lose overtime nail-biter to 'Canes

TAMPA -- Gabby Farkasfalvy knew she had to get her head on the ball.

After all, Palm Harbor University hadn't held a meeting the night before, talked strategy on the bus ride to the game or chanted "Rudy" (a rallying cry inspired by the movie about the Notre Dame walk-on) throughout the contest only for Farkasfalvy to miss the ball.

So, when Jackie Kenig's crossing pass veered toward her with little more than a minute remaining in the second of two sudden-death overtime periods, the PHU junior knew what she had to do.

Farkasfalvy headed the ball past goalkeeper Megan Robey, lifting Palm Harbor to a 2-1 victory over Bloomingdale in the Class 4A, District 7 championship game Friday at Sickles High.

The goal, Farkasfalvy's second of the game and 43rd of the season, allowed the Hurricanes to claim their third consecutive district title.

"The keeper was coming over, and she left the whole other side of the goal wide open," Farkasfalvy said. "I just tried to get it in there."

The game was everything you would expect from two nationally ranked teams (Bloomingdale 13th, Palm Harbor 14th) who were separated by a goal in their first two meetings.

Bloomingdale won 2-1 at Bloomingdale. The teams played to a scoreless tie at Palm Harbor.

Palm Harbor kept the ball in Bloomingdale's end for much of the game but found itself on the wrong end of a 1-0 score thanks to Lyndrea Sutherland's goal in the 27th minute of the first half.

Farkasfalvy tied the game with 12:50 to play. Farkasfalvy settled a crossing pass from Devon Sibole and redirected it past a diving Robey.

The teams played two five-minute overtimes and one five-minute sudden-death period before Farkasfalvy broke the tie late in the second sudden-death period.

In the state tournament, Bloomingdale will travel to Sarasota Riverview and PHU will host Fort Myers.
