No deal yet for Christensen

HONOLULU -- One week after naming Clyde Christensen offensive coordinator, the Bucs have not reached a contract agreement with him.

Neither Christensen nor general manager Rich McKay could be reached for comment Friday.

The apparent impasse might explain why Christensen was not at the news conference last week when Tony Dungy announced his decision to promote the Bucs' quarterbacks coach. Christensen has not returned phone calls this week.

Dungy has expressed an interest in filling all four coaching vacancies before making the coaches available to the media.

Aside from Christensen's appointment, the Bucs have not made a hire since the end of the season.

By contrast, in just a few days after being named the Cleveland Browns' coach on Monday, Butch Davis has hired Bruce Arians as offensive coordinator, Foge Fazio as defensive coordinator and Terry Robiskie as an offensive assistant.

Robiskie, the Redskins' interim coach after Norv Turner was fired last season with three games left, canceled an interview with the Bucs on Friday to accept the position with the Browns.

The Bucs are expected to offer former Wake Forest coach Jim Caldwell the job of quarterbacks coach this weekend.

Friday, the Bucs were scheduled to interview 49ers assistant Joe Barry for linebackers coach. Barry was in New York on Thursday interviewing for a similar position with Jets coach Herman Edwards.

Christensen is an original member of Dungy's staff and coached tights ends and quarterbacks before being promoted to offensive coordinator last week.

The Bucs still have to replace linebackers coach Lovie Smith, who was hired as the Rams' defensive coordinator last month; Edwards, who coached defensive backs before he was named Jets coach last month; offensive assistant Wendell Avery, who was dismissed in November; and Christensen as quarterbacks coach.
