SEMINOLE -- Lakewood's Lauri Tondreault had scored from the worst angle possible, directly off a corner kick, and missed from the best, clanging a penalty kick off the crossbar.

With time winding down in sudden-death overtime of the Class 2A, District 11 title game between No. 1 Lakewood and No. 3 Tarpon Springs, the last thing Tondreault wanted was the outcome left up to penalty kicks.

Sparing everyone the drama of PKs, Tondreault outraced a defender to a lead pass from Jessica Nieset and poked it under onrushing goalkeeper Lindsey Brabson with four minutes remaining to give Lakewood the title, 3-2.

The Spartans (15-4-1) will host Palmetto on Tuesday in a regional quarterfinal. Tarpon Springs (11-7) will travel to Lakewood Ranch.

"Everybody knew we had to put one in or else, because PKs are just not the way to go," said Tondreault. "Jess played a great ball, and I just knew I had to get to that ball."

Lakewood controlled the action in the first half and scored twice off corner kicks. Freshman Suzi Herbert converted a rebound for a 1-0 lead, and Tondreault's corner slipped past the near-post defender to make it 2-1.

Jessica Moore scored Tarpon's first-half goal, pouncing on a misplayed cross and knocking it in from 10 yards out. The Spongers took the action to Lakewood for much of the second half, and Katie Janisz tied it in the 51st minute. Both teams had good chances late in regulation -- including Tondreault's penalty kick -- but The first 16 minutes of overtime were quiet until Tondreault broke through.

A-8: Marauders rout Barons

CLEARWATER -- Clearwater Central Catholic took control early, scoring six goals in the first half en route to an 8-2 win over St. Petersburg Catholic to capture the Class 2A, District 8 title.

CCC (20-2) played almost entirely in the SPC (15-9-2) zone, flustering the Barons' star defender, Melissa Smith.

"I was real happy, real proud that the girls came out ready to play," CCC coach Tom Typrowicz said. "They showed the maturity of ball possession, moving the ball around and finding the open player."

CCC scored three goals in the game's first nine minutes to set the tone.

Stacy Typrowicz began the onslaught when she took a Sarah Sheehan pass in the box and put it away behind SPC goalie Joanne Clarie.

Jessica Hallgren then scored after Apryl Wall stole an outlet pass and drove in deep before passing it off. Amy Wirth kicked the third goal after a long throw-in from Hallgren to give CCC a 3-0 lead.

Jill Blatti, Kari Weniger and Samantha Robinson also added goals for the Marauders.
