Mother with 2 children in car charged with DUIBy Times staff writers © St. Petersburg Times, published February 4, 2001 HOLIDAY -- A 35-year-old woman was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol and child neglect after deputies stopped her for erratic driving with her two children in the car. Pasco County sheriff's deputies stopped Kari Illum of Brooksville at about 10 p.m. Friday. Illum's two children, age 12 and 4, were in the car, said officials. According to a deputy, one of the children told him that he asked his mother to pull over several times because he was afraid they would crash. The officer said that as she drove her 2000 VW Jetta, she crossed the double yellow line on Grand Boulevard and nearly struck another deputy's cruiser head-on. Deputies noted in a report that Illum had bloodshot eyes, slurred speech and was unsteady on her feet during sobriety tests. A breath test administered at the jail registered .085 and .090 -- just over the legal limit of .08 -- and she admitted to officials that she was taking prescription and non-prescription drugs, a report said. Illum told deputies that she thought she would be able to drive home safely if she "closed one eye," according to a report. She was booked into the county jail in Land O'Lakes, and was held on $5,500 bail. Woman, 35, faces abuse charge for hitting girlPORT RICHEY -- Pasco County sheriff's deputies said a 36-year-old woman punched a girl's hip on Friday because the girl did not clean her room. The woman, Stacey Ann Johnson of 11031 Columet Drive, New Port Richey, was charged with child abuse. Deputies would not disclose the relationship between Johnson and the girl or the girl's age. Deputies investigated the case after someone reported abuse in the home to state officials, a deputy's report said. Johnson, who is being held at the county jail in Land O'Lakes on $5,000 bail, told deputies that she "backhanded" the girl on her hip, and that she realized the punishment was "a bit excessive" according to a deputy. Johnson also was wanted on an outstanding warrant for a failure to appear in court on a charge of improper confinement of an aggressive animal, according to a deputy's report.
