Spring, winter crossover is hereBy JOHN C. COTEY © St. Petersburg Times, published February 4, 2001 NEW PORT RICHEY -- Ron Ladimir's boys tennis team is supposed to open its season next week, which means Ridgewood will have to play its first few matches with junior varsity call-ups. Land O'Lakes baseball coach Cal Baisley's team is practicing, even if the key components are busy playing basketball. It's here: overlap. With various spring sports already practicing and most short-handed, a number of teams will open their seasons while the winter sports teams wind down. The crossover effect makes this upcoming week perhaps the busiest of the year. Beginning Tuesday, all nine girls basketball teams begin district tournament play in four different districts in three different counties: Pasco (4A-8 is at Land O'Lakes), Pinellas (5A-9 is at Palm Harbor University and 3A-11 is at Central Clearwater Catholic) and Sumter (3A-6 is at Dunnellon). Also Tuesday, Land O'Lakes' and Zephyrhills' girls soccer teams will play regional quarterfinal games. Thursday is the day of the aforementioned girls basketball district semifinals, as well as when the boys from Hudson and Land O'Lakes play regional quarterfinal soccer games. Friday there are two district wrestling tournaments with another on Saturday, the same night as the girls basketball district tournament championships. Did we mention River Ridge and Land O'Lakes play three boys basketball games, and the other seven schools all have two games, including Wesley Chapel's showdowns with Ridgewood (for second in the SAC) and Pasco (for neighborhood bragging rights).
