Group will survey seniors to determine their needs

Volunteers hope to distribute more than 2,000 forms to help them find out what kind of care seniors are getting.

ST. PETERSBURG -- Neighbors in Palmetto Park are preparing to go door to door to find out which seniors among them may need help they are not getting.

A committee has spent weeks designing survey forms they will distribute to more than 2,000 homes. Canvassers will ask how shut-ins are getting meals and medical services, and how they rate the care they are receiving, said neighborhood association president Lurlis Simmons.

"I'm sure it will make a big difference here," said Simmons, 69, who has retired from the county highway division. "We have people here who really haven't been out of their houses in two or three years."

A core group of about eight plan to cover the neighborhood from Central Avenue and Eighth Avenue S, between 22nd Street and 34th Street. Questions are intended to target seniors and people with disabilities, Simmons said.

"Most people have relatives living with them, halfway caring for them. But you can't really care for them if you're not there all day."

Neighbors would like to gather those shut-ins who are able to meet and discuss their needs, including access to emergency services and programs such as Meals on Wheels.

"I've been here 30 years," Simmons said. "Let's face it, it's time for all of us to give something back to the neighborhood."
