Read, Cole power FSU baseball team

TALLAHASSEE -- Starter Roddy Read allowed one unearned run on two hits in five innings to lead Florida State to an 8-4 victory over Western Kentucky on Sunday.

Florida State's Chris Cole hit his first collegiate home run in the seventh, a shot to rightfield for a 7-2 lead.

Starter Ryan Bicondoa was the losing pitcher, allowing five earned runs in 31/3 innings.

Read struck out four and walked one.

Cole, Ryan Barthlemy and Tony Richie had two hits apiece to pace the Seminoles (2-0). Cole led all hitters with three RBI.

UF-UM RAINED OUT: The second game of the series was canceled because of poor weather in Gainesville. The game will not be rescheduled, but Florida may add a game Wednesday against Savannah State. The Gators and Hurricanes play Friday-Saturday at Mark Light Stadium.

Football

CENTER COMMITS TO UF: Palm Bay High center Mike Degory became the fourth offensive lineman to commit to Florida. The 6-foot-6, 312-pound Melbourne native chose the Gators over Virginia Tech.

Degory made his decision after last-minute visits from coaches last week. National Signing Day is Wednesday.

Softball

ARIZONA 5, SOUTH FLORIDA 0: The host Bulls remained winless. Ginny Georgantas was 2-for-3 to lead USF.

Tennis

ALABAMA 4, FSU 3: The Seminoles women (1-1) split singles but a Crimson Tide doubles sweep gave Alabama the match. FSU's Alida Gallovits defeated Emma Brerard 7-6, 6-4 at No. 1 singles.

FSU 6, GEORGIA SOUTHERN 1: The Seminoles men opened their home season successfully. The Eagles' point came at No. 1 singles, where Ryan O'Keefe defeated Alex Herrera 6-4, 6-2.
