Police reportsBy Times staff writer © St. Petersburg Times, published February 6, 2001 Man charged with waving gun in carWESLEY CHAPEL -- A 66-year-old man was arrested Sunday on Interstate 75 after allegedly waving a 9mm gun at passing motorists. Trooper Terry Sims pulled over Charles Leonard Cook, of 1430 Sanderling Circle in Sanibel Island, just north of the exit for I-275. Sims said he saw the pistol on Cook's passenger seat as he approached the vehicle. He said he reached through a window to grab the pistol just as Cook also reached for it. Sims beat Cook to the weapon and put it outside the car on the ground, a Florida Highway Patrol report stated. Sims said the gun was in a nylon holster that wasn't snapped shut. Cook admitted that the gun was loaded and that he had pointed it at another driver, the report stated. Sims later called Pasco County sheriff's deputies, who confiscated the gun along with 23 rounds of ammunition. Cook was charged with aggravated assault, carrying a concealed firearm and improper exhibition of a firearm. He was taken to Land O'Lakes jail, where he remained Monday in lieu of $3,000 bail.
