Transportation office offers safety course for bicyclists

ST. PETERSBURG -- A nine-hour bicycle safety course will be held from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Feb. 24 and March 3 at the city's transportation office, 1744 Ninth Ave. N.
Cost is $20, including a textbook and other materials. Sandwiches will be provided. The course is open to people age 16 and older. A bike in good working condition and a helmet are required at each session.
Designed by the League of American Bicyclists' education subcommittee, the Effective Cycling Road I course is considered among the best adult bike safety courses available. It is geared for both the novice and experienced riders.
The course covers principles of vehicular cycling, bicycle selection and fit, helmet use, bike handling skills, traffic rules and responsibilities, and minor maintenance skills.
Students are taught to be more aware of the intentions of motorists and learn to more effectively communicate intentions to motorists. There also will be instruction on safely executing emergency maneuvers.
