LAND O'LAKES -- Dr. Donald McBath spent so much time volunteering at Pasco High School that the School Board on Tuesday named the school's gymnasium after the longtime Dade City physician.

"Doctor Don," as Dr. McBath was known around town, died of cancer Jan. 3. In addition to maintaining a private practice, Dr. McBath founded Hospice of Pasco and for 25 years was the team doctor for Pasco High's athletic teams.

"He was so loving and caring to all," said board member Jean Larkin who made the motion to re-name the gymnasium. "He was such a dear friend to the students. He was on that football field every Friday night for 25 years."

Dr. McBath gave hundreds of free physicals to Pasco High students over the years, Larkin said. He was also a former president of the Dade City Rotary and helped oversee the health care of detention center inmates.
