Officials endorse hiking cable feeBy Times staff writer © St. Petersburg Times, published February 8, 2001 Pasco County commissioners unanimously supported ratcheting up the county's cable television franchise fee, a move that would raise the average person's monthly cable bill by less than $1. On Tuesday, the commissioners held their first reading of the cable TV ordinance that would raise the fee from 3 percent to 5 percent of a cable company's gross revenue from Pasco. The law would become effective in mid March, after a second and final reading of the ordinance scheduled for next week. The county's four cable companies, Time-Warner Communications, Moffat Communications, Constel Communications and Strategic Technologies, will pass the increase on to customers. Pasco is raising the fee before the state eliminates franchise fees this fall in favor of a uniform statewide charge. Tallahassee has promised to reimburse counties an amount equal to the money they already collect from fees. Pasco takes in about $1.2-million each year from cable companies. The fee increase will let Pasco collect about $900,000 more per year. One proposed use for the money is to broadcast commission meetings countywide. © 2006 • All Rights Reserved • Tampa Bay Times
