Is Les Miserables the best of the pop-operatic musicals? That's a category that also includes Cats, The Phantom of the Opera and Miss Saigon.
Many people love Les Miz the most because of its populist theme and stirring anthems, such as On My Own, Do You Hear the People Sing? and Bring Him Home, from the score by Alain Boublil and Claude-Michel Schonberg.
Since 1987, shortly after it opened on Broadway, Les Miserables has spawned three national tours, the first of which started out at Tampa Bay Performing Arts Center. Now, on the fifth time around for the show at the center, Ivan Rutherford plays Jean Valjean, Stephen Bishop is Javert and Thursday Farrar is Fantine in a production that opens Tuesday and continues through Feb. 25. Tickets: $22-$61.50. (813) 229-STAR or (800) 955-1045.
