UConn deals Hokies brutal reality check
BLACKSBURG, Va. -- Welcome to the Big East, Virginia Tech.
Sue Bird hit five of No. 3 Connecticut's 14 three-pointers Wednesday night and the Huskies ended Virginia Tech's five-game conference winning streak with a 90-38 pounding.
The Huskies, playing their second game without scoring leader Svetlana Abrosimova, never seemed to miss the two-time All-American as they took a 41-15 halftime lead and never let up.
Virginia Tech, in its first season in the Big East, never adjusted to the Huskies' defensive quickness. It made six field goals in the first half, shooting 20.7 percent.
Connecticut made 14 of 28 three-pointers, breaking the school record of 13 set against Holy Cross on Nov. 30, 1999. Maria Conlon broke the record when she hit one with 2:01 left.
NO. 1 NOTRE DAME 72, PITT 58: Ruth Riley matched her season high with 29 points and added 12 rebounds as the host Irish remained unbeaten.
NO. 9 IOWA ST. 83, OKLA. ST. 54: Lindsey Wilson scored 10 of her 22 points in the first 111/2 minutes as the Cyclones took control early. Oklahoma State made the 10-hour trip to Ames by bus because many players were hesitant to fly after last month's plane crash that killed two men's players and eight others in the traveling party.
NO. 11 TEXAS TECH 67, BAYLOR 56: Plenette Pierson had 20 points and nine rebounds for the visiting Red Raiders.
NO. 10 OKLAHOMA 84, NEBRASKA 62: LaNeishea Caufield had 16 points and broke her school record with her 28th straight free throw for the visiting Sooners.
NO. 12 RUTGERS 64, SYRACUSE 53: Tammy Sutton-Brown scored 15 points and Davalyn Cunningham 14 for the host Scarlet Knights.
NO. 19 COLORADO 70, KANSAS 60: Jenny Roulier had 13 points, and the visiting Buffaloes used a 9-0 run late in the second half to seal the win.
NO. 21 TEXAS 69, TEXAS A&M 41: Tracy Cook had 12 points and 13 rebounds to lead the visiting Longhorns.
ARKANSAS: Shameka Christon and Lakeisha Beard were suspended indefinitely for violating team rules.
MIAMI 84, W. VA 68: Sheila James had her first double double of the season with 17 points and a career-high 10 assists to lead the host Hurricanes.
BARRY 59, ECKERD 53: Jaida Williams had 12 points and 16 rebounds, her second straight double double and sixth this season for the host Buccaneers.
