Campus calendarBy SUZANNE SCRUGGS © St. Petersburg Times, published February 9, 2001 MUSIC: UT's Department of Music presents The Academy Wind Quintet from the West Point Band with master classes from 8:30 to 12 p.m. today in the UT Music Building. A concert performance will be at 4 p.m. Sunday, in the Music Room in Plant Hall. The Quintet presents a varied program of virtuoso chamber music for winds, featuring repertoire ranging from the late 18th century courts of Europe to the contemporary masters of the 20th century. These events are free. Call (813) 253-3333, ext. 3527. THEATER: UT presents live theatre Upstairs/Downstairs at the Tampa Bay Hotel. The single character performance of Otis Freedman-Head Waiter at the Tampa Bay Hotel 1905, played by Donald Polk, will be at 2 p.m. Sunday in The Henry B. Plant Museum. USF's BRIT program guest artist, Philip Wilson, adapts and directs William Shakespeare's As You Like It at 8 p.m., Feb. 15-17, in Theatre 1 on campus. The story is a witty, romantic comedy about a group of travelers who journey from the violent, sophisticated, urban world of the court to the peaceful idyll of the "Forest of Arden." Wilson is a former assistant director at the Royal Shakespeare Company and performance consultant for the 1999 Academy award winning film, Shakespeare In Love. ART: HCC's Ybor Campus Art Gallery features an exhibit by artist Barbra Beeler today through March 11 in the performing arts building, room 101. The exhibit features contemporary trends in polacolor transfer photography. Beeler creates her photographs working with a 6-foot Polaroid camera. The exhibit is free. Call (813) 253-7674. USF's Pre-College and Community Outreach departments will offer the Saturday Arts for Youth classes beginning Saturday on the Tampa campus. Classes offered include the Young Actor's Studio, and classes in cartooning, drawing, watercolor and essay writing. Call (813) 974-2403. EVENTS: USF's College of Medicine will honor the lifetime achievements of transplant pioneer Robert Good. Leading immunology and transplantation experts will speak Friday at the All Children's Hospital Conference Center in St. Petersburg, and Saturday at the Hyatt Regency City Center in Tampa. The scientific sessions Saturday will be followed by an evening banquet at the Hyatt Regency. Good is a professor of pediatrics and microbiology and immunology at USF's College of Medicine. Call (813) 974-4014. UT presents the Robert Saunders and Leon Russell Civil Rights Symposium at 7 p.m. Monday in the Plant Hall music room. Saunders, NAACP leader and author of Bridging the Gap, and Leon W. Russell, the Human Rights/EEO Officer for Pinellas County Government and a member of the National Board of Directors of the NAACP, will provide an insider's account of Florida's civil rights struggle. Call (813) 253-6232. UT is hosting The UT MBA Association Executive Luncheon Series from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday in the grand salon of Plant Hall on campus. The guest speaker will be Steven Polzin, a senior research associate at USF, with a doctorate in civil engineering. He teaches courses in public transit and transportation land use. Polzin will be speaking on Railroading Florida: Transportation and the Decision to Proceed with High Speed Rail. $15 MBAA members, UT MBA students, UT faculty. $20 public. Call (813) 253-6209. DANCE: UT hosts a Spring Dance Concert at 8 p.m., Feb. 15-17, in the David Falk Theatre. A matinee performance will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 17. The concert features jazz, modern, ballet and tap.
