TAMPA -- After his double-double performance (23 points, 10 rebounds) Saturday against Florida Southern, Spartans junior forward Gecarri Freeman earned Sunshine State Conference Player of the Week honors.

In leading UT to victories over Saint Leo and Florida Southern last week, Freeman averaged 15.5 points, 7 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 1.5 steals. Freeman was 12-of-20 from the floor and 7-of-11 from the free-throw line. His presence was a huge factor in the 75-69 win over the Moccasins. In addition to his points and rebounds, Freeman's last of his three steals cemented the victory by giving UT the ball and sending him to the free-throw line with just seconds remaining. Freeman now leads UT in scoring with a 12.4 average and is 10th in the conference.

UT (17-4 overall and 6-3 in the conference) currently is alone in fourth place. Florida Southern, Eckerd and Lynn are tied for first at 7-2.

The Spartans host Barry (13-8, 2-7) at 4 p.m. Saturday and Florida Tech at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday. WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: After splitting its two games last week, the Spartans are tied for third place, two games out of first, with four games left to play.

UT beat Saint Leo 80-61 but followed that with a heartbreaking 55-54 loss at the buzzer to rival Florida Southern.

The Spartans were led by Yushonda Morse with 15 points, 15 rebounds and 5 steals. The Spartans host Barry at 2 p.m. Saturday and Florida Tech at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday. WOMEN'S TENNIS: UT opened the season Jan. 30 with a 4-2 victory over Saint Leo. The Spartans lost in Nos. 1 and 2 singles but still had more than enough firepower to turn back the Lions.

After a 3-6, 2-6 loss by No. 1 Jenny LaRue, No. 2 Abby Shelide fell 4-6, 4-6.

No. 3 Lena Makurath led UT with a 1-6, 6-1, 6-3 win followed by victories by Christine Krivac (6-7, 6-4, 1-0), Katelyn Demers (6-0, 6-0) and Kristen Kowal, who won by default.
