FSU adds top DB to class

Dominic Robinson, one of the nation's top-rated cornerbacks, signed with Florida State on Thursday as expected, continuing the Garnet and Gold rush of highly touted prospects heading to Tallahassee.

The 6-foot-1, 192-pound Robinson, from Diamond Bar, Calif., also considered Washington and Tennessee. He is nicknamed "Prime Time 2" after his childhood idol, former FSU All-American Deion Sanders. He had 10 interceptions, broke up 20 passes and had 93 tackles as a senior.

FSU's class of 28 was tabbed as the consensus No. 1 nationally before Robinson signed. FSU could add another blue-chipper today, Carver's Bay (S.C.) defensive end Robert Geathers. He is considering FSU, Clemson, South Carolina and Georgia.

Gators add punter/kicker

GAINESVILLE -- Kicker Matt Leach from Sarasota Booker signed with Florida, bringing the number of signees to 18. No additions are expected.

Rivals.com named Leach an All-American and ranked him among the country's top five kickers. He is in the top 5 in national high school history with 35 career field goals (in 44 attempts). He made three of 50-plus yards and had 42.4 yards a punt as a senior.

TENNESSEE: Coach Phillip Fulmer believes he has found players to help at receiver, defensive back, linebacker and, in particular, running back. Tennessee signed four backs -- the Vols' biggest priority after the departure of senior Travis Henry. Jabari Davis of Stone Mountain, Ga.; Cedric Houston of Clarendon, Ark.; Derrick Tinsley of Marietta, Ga., and Keldrick Williams of Montgomery, Ala., will compete against Travis Stephens and Troy Fleming.

UF women's soccer

The Gators signed seven players, including Countryside High School's Stephanie Freeman. They'll join the program in the fall.

Freeman, a two-time all-state selection, was the second-leading scorer (36 goals) in Pinellas County for 1999-2000 season. Her older sister, Melanie, was a member of the UF team from 1995-97 and was an All-Southeastern Conference defender in 1996 and '97.

Other signees from in-state are Mary Ebert, a defender/midfielder from Fort Lauderdale Westminster Academy and Ashley Kellgren, a forward from Lake Mary. Ebert was a kicker for the football team in 1998 and '99.
