No world golds for the ‘Herminator’

Michael von Gruenigen sent Hermann Maier home without a gold medal.

Von Gruenigen, tied for fourth with "The Herminator" after the first run, won the giant slalom Thursday at the world Alpine skiing championships at St. Anton, Austria.

"It wasn't very easy today," von Gruenigen said. "The duel between Hermann and me was widely talked about."

Von Gruenigen's two-run time was 2 minutes, 23.80 seconds. Maier was fourth in 2:24.19, .01 behind Frederic Covili.

The 1998 Olympic champion in the giant slalom, Maier disappointed home fans by failing to defend titles in the super-giant slalom and downhill.

"It didn't go so badly," said Maier, who was second in the downhill and third in the super-G.

BOWLING: Tony Reyes rolled a 300 game to take a 24-pin lead over Brian Himmler in second-round qualifying in the PBA Tour's Parker Bohn III Empire State Open at Latham, N.Y. Reyes had a 12-game pinfall total of 2,873.

BOXING: World heavyweight champion Lennox Lewis will defend his title April 21 in Johannesburg, South Africa, against American Hasim Rahman, his manager, Frank Maloney, said. A spokesman for Lewis' U.S. promoter, Main Events, said the announcement was premature. "We are listening to (South Africa's) offer," Donald Tremblay said. ... Former heavyweight champion Riddick Bowe was arrested after a fight with his wife at their home on Long Island, authorities said. Bowe's wife, whom authorities would not identify, was treated at a hospital and released. Bowe remained in custody in Syosset, N.Y. He was charged with third-degree assault, a misdemeanor.

COLLEGES: Runs in a game was not the only school record Florida set in its 35-1 baseball win over Savannah State on Wednesday. The margin of victory was a record. Ben Harrison set school records for at-bats (three), runs scored (three) and hits (three) in the second inning.

FIGURE SKATING: Canadians Jamie Sale and David Pelletier defended their Four Continents pairs title at Salt Lake City. Americans Kyoko Ina and John Zimmerman were third. In ice dancing, Canadians Shae-Lynn Bourne and Victor Kraatz continued to lead after the original dance. Late Wednesday, Todd Eldredge of the United States led after the men's short program.

HORSES: Tyler Baze, the Eclipse Award winner as the outstanding apprentice jockey of last year, had his first three-win day as a journeyman rider, on the eight-race card at Santa Anita.

OLYMPICS: One year before the Winter Games begin, Salt Lake City's chief planner, Mitt Romney, said preparations were on target and "the only thing that can mess up is me and our team, and that's what worries me most."

SOCCER: Marco Di Vaio scored with six minutes left in the first half, and Parma advanced to the Italian Cup final by beating Udinese 1-0. Parma plays Fiorentina April 11 and June 13.

TENNIS: Todd Martin, the veteran of the U.S. Davis Cup team, plays teen sensation Roger Federer in today's opener of the first-round competition against Switzerland at Basel, Switzerland. Jan-Michael Gambill, the team's highest-ranked American, meets Michel Kratochvil in the second match. Gambill and Justin Gimelstob will play doubles, although Patrick McEnroe, debuting as captain, can change his mind almost up until the match is played Saturday. The reverse singles are Sunday. ... Anna Kournikova beat Sandra Kleinova 6-0, 6-3 to reach the quarterfinals of the Gaz de France tournament in Paris. Defending champion Nathalie Tauziat also advanced.

TRACK AND FIELD: Arne Ljungqvist, head of the world governing body's anti-doping commission, threatened to ban 1999 world shot put champion C.J. Hunter if the U.S. governing body doesn't act soon. Hunter tested positive for the anabolic steroid nandrolone four times last year. Ljungqvist said he would raise the issue at this weekend's anti-doping commission meeting. Hunter is married to Olympic gold medalist Marion Jones.
