Police: Bengals QB Smith driving under influence
SAN DIEGO -- Akili Smith, the Bengals' second-year quarterback, was arrested Thursday for investigation of drunken driving.
Smith, the third overall pick in the 1999 draft, was pulled over for driving the wrong way on a one-way street in the downtown Gaslamp Quarter at about 2 a.m., police spokesman Bill Robinson said. Smith told the officer he was looking for friends.
Smith was given a sobriety test and booked into county jail, Robinson said. He was released on $1,600 bail.
"If the information is accurate, this is a matter that Akili will have to handle with the proper authorities," Bengals spokesman Jack Brennan said.
Smith, from San Diego's Lincoln High, lost his starting job after 10 games last season.
BRONCOS: An arrest warrant was issued for tight end Byron Chamberlain after he missed a hearing in a driving-under-suspension case.
LIONS: Ex-NFL defensive end Charles Haley, 37, is the staff's new pass-rush specialist.
PACKERS: Green Bay and Mike Sherman have agreed to terms on a contract that will compensate him for his new dual role as coach and general manager.
REDSKINS: Washington has contacted officials at William & Mary about the possibility of holding training camp at the college beginning in late July.
SAINTS: Mississippi quietly has launched an effort to lure the franchise across the state line if it cannot work out a deal to stay in Louisiana. The Gulfport Sun Herald reported that the Saints are interested in a site along Interstate 10 near Stennis Space Center, about 45 miles from downtown New Orleans. It could become part of a large sports complex involving a NASCAR track and an all-purpose arena suitable for hockey, basketball, concerts and other events.
STEELERS: Kenny Jackson, receivers coach at Penn State since 1993, was hired to replace Bob Bratkowski as receivers coach. Jackson was the Eagles' first-round draft pick in 1984.
