A fire that charred land once mined for phosphate near Mulberry in Polk County was under control Friday, but other wildfires popped up over the area, and firefighters braced for more to come this weekend.

Meanwhile, firefighters in southeastern Citrus County battled a fire that began Thursday and grew to nearly 1,200 acres by Friday evening. It was concentrated near the former shores of parched Lake Tsala Apopka.

The southwestern Polk County fire covered 1,500 acres near State Roads 640 and 555.

The National Weather Service said there is a chance of rain this weekend, but no serious rainfall is forecast for the next seven days.

    - Information from The Ledger in Lakeland was used in this report.
