Bulls win opener against nation's top lefty
DELAND -- About 25 scouts came to see Lenny DiNardo, one of the nation's top left-handers, but South Florida's John Gorham was more impressive as the Bulls opened with a 6-1 win against No. 20 Stetson.
DiNardo, a first-team All-American last season with a 16-1 record and the nation's sixth best ERA at 1.90, gave up five runs on seven hits. DiNardo had won 13 consecutive after losing to the Bulls 9-2 last February in Tampa. He is 1-3 against USF.
Gorham, a junior from Armwood who was 10-5 last season, walked one and scattered four singles in seven innings. The run he allowed was unearned.
"Gorham is the winning pitcher," USF coach Eddie Cardieri said. "He's just a warrior who goes out there and battles. He made several big pitches."
"I didn't have particularly good stuff today," said Gorham, who had two strikeouts. "I just let my defense make the plays."
Shortstop Evan Brannon knocked in the first run with a single in his college debut. The St. Petersburg High product had three RBI.
MIAMI 10, FLORIDA 4: The Hurricanes extended their win streak over the Gators at Coral Gables to 11 games. Brian Walker earned the win by pitching five innings. Five relievers allowed three hits and one earned run to close the win. Miami had no STANFORD 5, FSU 2: Jeff Bruksch held the Seminoles hitless for seven innings as the host Cardinal beat Florida State for the second straight day. Late Friday, Jeremy Guthrie held FSU to one hit in seven innings as coach Mark Marquess won his 1,000th game, 6-2.
TAMPA 2-7, GEORGIA COLLEGE 0-2: Charlie Manning pitched a three-hit shutout and Matt Smith was 3-for-4 to lead the host Spartans in the first game of a sweep. In the second game, Mike Sullivan picked up his second win by striking out six in five innings.
FIU 2, FSU 1: A two-run homer by Shannon Carey in the sixth inning ruined the Seminoles bid for a shutout. It was Florida State's first loss.
USF WOMEN: The distance medley relay team broke the school record by 22 seconds at the Canon Invitational in Indianapolis. Rita Arndt, Amber Delpino, Cori Kill and Jolene Williams were timed at 11 minutes, 38 seconds, two seconds shy of qualifying for the NCAA Indoor Championships.
FLORIDA: The Gators qualified 13 for the NCAAs at the Tyson Invitation in Fayetteville, Ark. Five men qualified in Florida's final tuneup before the SEC championships Feb. 24. Courtney Chambers qualified by winning the 3,000 meters in a career-best time of 8:24.12.
There were eight women qualifiers, including Niki Benjamin in the 60 meters (7.41 seconds) and 200 meters (20.83).
USF WOMEN: The Bulls won the three doubles matches and maintained the momentum for a 5-2 win against visiting Georgia Southern. Natalie Schwartz, Ashlee Callahan, Ildiko Zubor and Claudia Nieto won singles matches for USF.
FLORIDA MEN: The team trails first-place College of Charleston by a shot going into today's final round of the Gator Invitational in Gainesville. Junior Camilo Benedetti has the lead for the Gators. Freshman Camilo Villegas is tied for fifth.
