Storm guard shrugs off split lip to sink Miami

MIAMI -- Omar Cook had 21 points and 12 assists and made two key three-pointers in the second overtime as St. John's outlasted Miami 85-79 on Saturday.

Playing with five stitches in his upper lip, Cook hit consecutive three-pointers in the second overtime to vault the Red Storm from three points down to three points ahead.

It was the Red Storm's second overtime victory this season against Miami. At Madison Square Garden last month, St. John's beat the Hurricanes 67-63.

The second meeting was much more physical.

Cook, who leads the nation in assists, missed more than seven minutes in the second half after taking an inadvertent elbow to the mouth from Miami's Darius Rice.

The teams combined for 62 fouls. Six players fouled out and Miami was hit with two technical fouls. Even a Hurricanes cheerleader had to leave after getting hit in the face with the ball.

St. John's made 30 of 43 free throws, and Miami made 29 of 41.

Rice led Miami with 21 points despite fouling out with 48 seconds left in regulation.

St. John's led 32-28 when Cook went to the locker room. When the freshman guard returned, Miami was ahead 43-39.

Cook's 10-foot jumper with 30.6 seconds left in regulation tied the score at 63 and forced overtime. Cook had a chance to win it in the final seconds of the first overtime, but his driving shot missed.
