Familiar foe dumps Berkeley

TAMPA -- For the third time in as many years, Orangewood Christian stopped Berkeley Prep dead in its tracks, only two games from the state final four.

This year's result? Orangewood 2, Berkeley Prep 0.

The frustration in the 2001 version was two-fold: The Bucs were at home and they dominated play, outshooting Orangewood 20-7.

"We sure had a lot of chances, but we just couldn't finish them off," Berkeley Prep coach Ken Roberts said. "(Orangewood) scrambled throughout the game to hold it together and then took advantage of the opportunities they got."

The first conversion came in the 24th minute when sixth-grader Christy Longden barely popped a shot by Buc keeper Colleen Kalafut, who got both hands on the ball but couldn't stop it from inching over the line.

After the score, Berkeley (21-7-2) applied tremendous pressure on Orangewood (18-7). Shots came fast and furious all the way to the half, but none slipped into the net.

"We got out of our game plan toward the end of the first half," Orangewood coach Pat Fend said. "We were just clearing balls out, rather than passing and moving the ball around.

"But we got that straightened out at the half and things went better after that."

At halftime, Roberts said the Bucs, who had outshot Orangewood 11-4 in the first 20 minutes, felt "very good" about their chances of winning.

"It seemed like good things were going to come our way because we had controlled the play," he said. "But it was just one of those nights where things didn't work out."

Roberts acknowledged that after Orangewood scored its second goal on a breakaway in the 65th minute, Berkeley seemed to take a while to get its aggression back.

"I think that second goal was tough to take," Roberts said. "But then toward the end we started really getting after it again."
