Lendl and Rose to enter Hall for tennis

Eight-time Grand Slam winner Ivan Lendl and Mervyn Rose, an Australian star from the 1950s, will be inducted July 14 to the International Hall of Fame in Newport, R.I.

Lendl won three U.S., three French and two Australian titles and led Czechoslovakia to its only Davis Cup title in 1980. Rose was a member of 1951 and '52 Davis Cup champions and won the 1954 Australian and 1958 French titles.

MORE TENNIS: Three-time Marseille Open winner Marc Rosset began his title defense with a 2-6, 6-2, 7-5 victory over Gianluca Pozzi. ... No. 2 seed Vladimir Voltchkov lost to Wayne Black and No. 1 Tim Henman needed three sets to beat Slava Dosedel at the Copenhagen Open. ... Magdalena Maleeva beat Patty Schnyder in the Terazura tournament at Nice, France.

OLYMPICS: Two months after declaring Actovegin a banned substance, the IOC is reconsidering. IOC medical director Patrick Schamasch said the committee is uncertain whether the drug enhances performance and asked for further study. ... The American Civil Liberties Union has sued to force Olympic security planners to disclose sites where demonstrators will be allowed during the 2002 Winter Games.

HORSES: Macho Uno, the champion 2-year-old and winner of the Breeders' Cup Juvenile, has an injured left rear ankle and will not run the Kentucky Derby.

SOCCER: Luis Figo scored on a penalty kick with one minute left to give Real Madrid a 3-2 win over Lazio of Rome in the European Champions Cup. The defending champs stayed atop Group D at 3-0. Leeds also beat visiting Anderlecht 2-1. In Group C, leader Bayern Munich (2-0-1) beat visiting Spartak Moscow 1-0, and Arsenal won 1-0 at Lyon.

GOLF: Mike Weir won the Syl Apps Award, the second year in a row he was named Ontario's athlete of the year.

ETC.: The Florida Sports Foundation added St. Petersburg native Nicole Haislett and fellow former swimmer Nancy Hogshead-Makar of Jacksonville to its board of directors. Haislett won three gold medals at the 1992 Olympics and is a chef at the PGA National Resort and Spa in Palm Beach Gardens. William Hammond of Fort Myers was reappointed. SKIING: Janica Kostelic, 19, who leads the overall World Cup standings, is quitting at the end of the season to return to school, according to her father, Ante. The head of the Croatian ski federation, Vedran Pavlek, said he is confident she will not quit. ... American Bode Miller will miss the rest of the season with injuries to both knees but expects to be ready for the 2002 Olympics.

AUTOS: The Corvette team of Ron Fellows, Chris Kneifel and Johnny O'Connell, which won the 24 Hours of Daytona on Feb. 4, plans to enter the LeMans 24 Hours in June.

BASKETBALL: The Tampa Bay ThunderDawgs released former NBA guard Lloyd Daniels. He averaged 10.4 points and 3.1 rebounds in 10 games.

HIGH SCHOOLS: Fort Lauderdale Westminster High's boys basketball team must forfeit 27 of its 28 wins this season for using a player, Ben Bowling, ruled ineligible by the Florida High School Activities Association.

SOFTBALL: The Florida Wahoos of the Women's Pro Softball League re-signed Stephanie Klaviter, last season's league Pitcher of the Year.

CYCLING: Laurent Jalabert fell off a ladder while changing a light bulb at home and broke at least three ribs. He is expected to be hospitalized at least a month.

HOCKEY: An amateur hockey coach who instructed his 13-year-old goalie to allow a goal agreed to demands by parents and team directors that he quit. The goalie, Jordan Barber, refused to follow the order, so Mike McKenelry pulled him from the Feb. 3 game in Ann Arbor, Mich., in the closing seconds, allowing the opposition to tie the score. Official said McKenelry wanted a tie to avoid a tougher opponent in the next day's semifinal of the tournament.

BOXING: Tony Marshall will replace Jose Luis Lopez, who has pneumonia, for a 10-round junior middleweight bout against Alex Bunema March2 at Las Vegas.
