Rainbow Springs State Park offers week of events, art showBy Times staff writer © St. Petersburg Times, published February 15, 2001 RAINBOW SPRINGS -- The Friends of Rainbow Springs State Park present the third annual Spring in the Spring from Feb. 25 to March 4. The eighth annual Art in the Park will be March 3-4. Feb. 25: Cracker Day with demonstrations of candle, soap and paper making, corn grinding, weaving, spinning, tatting, basketry with natural materials, quilting, crafts, skills and trades that were essential to our settlers. Music and storytelling by Ranger Billy Roberson from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. Feb. 26: Gardening Day starting at 10 a.m. with master gardeners presenting programs on native landscaping and gardening tips. Native plants on sale Monday through Friday, 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Feb. 27: Wildlife Day at 10 a.m. with Bonnie Rainbow and her Florida panther and Dr. Dawn Miller, DVM, with Eye of the Eagle program at 11:30 a.m. The Audubon Society presentation is at 1 p.m. with exhibits during the day. All participants will be at the park from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. -- if the animals cooperate. Feb. 28: Children's Day with a visit by Mother Goose and her "Suitcase of Puppets" at 10 a.m. Mike Gorden of Gorden's Animal House will visit at 11 a.m. to share his love of animals. Bring your little ones from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. for fun, snacks and surprises. March 1: Early Floridians' Day at 10 a.m. will feature historians D. Steotzer and J. Lester Dinkins, followed by presentations on the Paleo Indians by Rangers Liz Blocker and Andy Moody at 1 p.m. March 2: Aquatic Education Day will feature the program "What's Up Down Under" at 10 a.m. and repeated at 1 p.m. This is an excellent program and should not be missed. March 3-4: Art in the Park starting, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., is the eighth annual exhibition and offerings of the finest paintings from three local clubs: the Citrus Watercolor Club, the Ocala Art Group and the Beverly Hills Art Group. Paintings have been donated by three artists for display in the visitor center. Music provided by Shade Tree Pickers each day from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Admission is $1 per person each day. During this celebration of spring, the park facilities will be available. Scheduled events are subject to weather changes and other changes.
