Food, folks and fun

There's still time to pig out on corn dogs and funnel cakes and then take a spin on the Tilt-a-Whirl. The Florida State Fair continues through Monday at the fairgrounds, east of Tampa.

The stars of the Grand Ole Opry provide the headline entertainment today at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. The shows are $5, plus fair admission. Country stars Lorrie Morgan and Sammy Kershaw perform at 2 and 7 p.m. Friday, also for $5.

Those who can't get enough midway thrills can ride all day Friday, Sunday and Monday for $20 during Pepsi Armband days.

Of course, for those who wish not to churn their stomachs, the fair is filled with livestock exhibitions, crafts and food displays, strolling entertainers, horse shows and people-watching extraordinaire.

The fairgrounds are on U.S. 301, Interstate 4 exits 5 or 6A. Gates open at 9 a.m. daily (closing hours vary). Admission is $7 adults, $4 for ages 6-11. Today is Senior Day, when those 55 and older can enter for $5. For information, call (800) 345-3247 or (813) 621-7821.

UniverSoul appeal

Billed as the nation's only African-American circus troupe, UniverSoul Circus returns to Tampa this week, bringing its blend of traditional circus acts and urban culture, set to hip-hop, R&B, reggae and world music.

The acts include Onionhead the clown, above, whose repertoire features a variety of urban characters. Other highlights of this year's show: an 11-year-old contortionist, a magic act with a white tiger and a combination high wire and low wire performance with men from Colombia, South America and Africa.

The UniverSoul Circus started in Atlanta in 1994 and went on the road in 1996. This year's tour kicked off in Miami on Feb. 2 and will travel to 21 other U.S. cities and to South Africa after leaving Tampa.

The remaining performances in the Big Top at Raymond James Stadium are at 10:30 a.m. and 7:30 p.m. today and Friday; noon, 4:30 p.m. and 8 p.m. Saturday; and noon, 3:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. Sunday. Tickets are $10-$26. (813) 287-8844 or (727) 898-2100.
