INVERNESS -- Property Appraiser Ron Schultz has announced that the deadline to apply for a homestead exemption is March 1. The Inverness and Crystal River property appraisers' offices will be open Feb. 28 and March 1 until 7 p.m. for those who have not applied for 2001 homestead exemption.
To be eligible for a homestead exemption, you must own the property and be a Florida resident who was living in the home on Jan. 1. Proof of Florida residency may include: Florida driver's license, Citrus County voter registration and Florida auto tags. Your deed or tax notice will serve as proof of ownership.
Each owner must provide his or her Social Security number as well as proof of residency. Failure to provide a Social Security number will result in the denial of the exemption. Date of birth, employment and last year's address are also required. This information must be provided for both spouses, if married, even if only one name is on the deed.
Property appraisers' employees also will be at the Inverness Kmart on Saturday and the Crystal River Mall on Feb. 24 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. to complete applications.
The Inverness office is on the second floor of the courthouse in room 201. The Crystal River office is at the south end of Crystal Square Shopping Center on U.S. 19. For information, call the Inverness office at 341-6600 or the Crystal River office at 795-7725.
