Free safety checks for boats offeredBy Times staff writer © St. Petersburg Times, published February 16, 2001 The U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary will offer free safety checks for boaters Saturday at boat ramps at Seminole Street in Clearwater and in Belleair Bluffs. The safety checks will begin at 9 a.m. and end at noon. The examination is available to those with vessels, including sailboats, less than 64 feet long. Personal watercraft also can be examined. The examinations will tell boaters whether their vessels comply with federal and state requirements. The goal of the examiners is to tell boaters what they need to do to meet the requirements so they don't get equipment-related citations on the water. Examiners also hope the checks will prevent accidents on the water. The examination will include determining whether registration numbers are properly displayed, if necessary documentation is on board and whether there are enough life jackets and fire extinguishers on board. © 2006 • All Rights Reserved • Tampa Bay Times
