BEVERLY HILLS -- A tanker truck carrying hot asphalt overturned on Pine Ridge Boulevard on Friday afternoon, spilling some of its load onto the roadway.
The crash occurred as the tanker was headed east on Pine Ridge near County Road 486 at 3:45 p.m. As the tanker entered a curve, its cargo shifted, the driver lost control and the rig rolled over, according to a news release from the Florida Highway Patrol.
About 300 gallons of 400-degree asphalt spilled. The driver of the truck, Kevin Keith Cupit, 23, of 8600 W Kimberly Court, Homosassa, was not seriously injured, but was taken to Seven Rivers Hospital. He was charged with careless driving.
The Citrus County Haz-Mat team, which is trained in handling spills of hazardous materials, dug trenches to contain the spill. The tanker was taken away about 1:30 a.m. The hardened asphalt was being removed Saturday from the roadway.
