ORLANDO -- There were few surprises at the Class 3A, Region 2 meet, but those that did occur were big enough to make up for the whole night.

Bloomingdale's David Mason, a two-time defending state champion who had not lost since the regional meet two years ago, lost in the quarterfinal round and was forced to fight his way to state through the consolation bracket.

And River Ridge senior Mike Boice, not expected to be making the trip to state, pulled a minor upset and advanced to the 140-pound final before losing to Jeff Cotto of Palm Bay on a 7-3 decision.

Bloomingdale qualified the most area wrestlers, sending six to Lakeland.

Pinellas County's only qualifier was Palm Harbor University's Robert Goetz, who finished fourth at 152 pounds.
