Springstead rules; sends 8 to state

BROOKSVILLE -- Springstead closed the Class A, Region 2 tournament Saturday the same way it began it -- by dominating.

The Eagles ran away with the team title 192 to 131.5 over Pasco. They also took home five regional championships. In all, eight Springstead wrestlers will be at Thursday's state tournament in Lakeland.

Springstead coach Bob Levija liked what he saw during the two-day regional event at Central. A week after four Eagles lost in district finals, Springstead won six of eight consolation and championship finals Saturday.

Jason Faucher (119 pounds), Matt Booker (135), Gerard DeCristofaro (140), Louis Kachiroubas (145) and Steve Garafano (172) each won regional titles.

"The kids really turned themselves around from last week," Levija said. "I count that to assistant coaches. They brought the kids back at night and the kids really trained hard. They got the kids really ready."

Pasco also closed out the regional tournament with a flourish, vaulting from fourth to second. The Pirates will send seven wrestlers to state and won six of seven consolation and championship matches Saturday.

Alvaro Moreno (152) and Tye Reedy (189) won regional championships. Moreno handed Springstead's Reggie Pena his first loss of the season with a takedown in the closing seconds. The Pirates also won four consolation titles.

"We prepare for the moment. We don't prepare for people," said Pasco coach Mark DeAugustino. "Whoever steps on the mat is going to get a tough match, win or lose."

Lecanto also enjoyed a late surge Saturday. The Panthers jumped from 13th to fifth with 92.5 points. Jimmy Rodriguez (112) and Harold Skidmore (130) won regional titles.

Central finished sixth with 88 points as Bucky Solomon (103) won a regional title. Two other Bears will join Solomon at state.

Zephyrhills finished seventh with 85.5 points. The Bulldogs will be sending five wrestlers to state. Ryan Hall won a regional title at 125 pounds while three Bulldogs won consolation titles.

Hernando's Drew Innes won a regional title at 160 pounds. He will be joined by two other Leopards at state.
