UF falls again at home

GAINESVILLE -- Jennifer Fambrough hit two free throws with 5.8 seconds left as Mississippi State upset No. 9 Florida 79-75 Sunday afternoon.

"Finding a way to win for us during this year, in this up-and-down season, a lot of our kids haven't had the focus to shoulder that responsibility," Mississippi State coach Sharron Fanning said. "Today I saw maturity."

The return of junior All-American Brandi McCain, who missed one game with inflammation in her right heel, could not help the Gators avoid their second straight home loss.

The Bulldogs led by nine at halftime and maintained the lead through most of the second half.

A 7-0 run with six minutes to play put Florida up by one, but the Bulldogs regrouped and took a two-point lead with one minute left on Fambrough's three-pointer.

With less than 30 seconds to go, Gators freshman Vanessa Hayden missed twice in the paint. On the next trip down senior Tombi Bell's attempted tying shot was blocked.

MARQUETTE 64, USF 55: Heidi Bowman had 28 points and made four straight three-pointers in the first 13 minutes for the visiting Golden Eagles.

Aiya Shepard had 28 points and Shannon Layne got her 1,000th career point on Senior Day for the Bulls.

USF cut a 30-19 deficit to 32-25 at the half, then opened the second half with a 9-1 run to take a 34-33 lead. Marquette went on a 10-4 run over the next three minutes for a 43-38 lead with 13:45 left.

The Bulls closed within 54-52 when Shepard hit a free throw with 3:50 remaining, but they couldn't get closer.

"Our kids gave great effort today," USF coach Jose Fernandez said. "We played three kids 40 minutes and they battled and fought as hard as they could. Marquette is a very tough team and Heidi Bowman is one of the best players in Conference USA."

FSU 80, UNC 78 (OT): Brooke Wyckoff hit two free throws with 40 seconds left in overtime, then blocked a shot by LaQuanda Barksdale to lift the visiting Seminoles to their fifth straight win. The Tar Heels' Coretta Brown made a three-point play to tie the score at 69 and force overtime.
