Lakewood Estates offers reward for arrest of vandalsBy JOANNE B. WALKER © St. Petersburg Times, published February 20, 2000 A $500 reward has been posted by Lakewood Estates Golf Course for information leading to the arrest of vandals. An additional $500 reward is being paid upon conviction. Drivers are doing circle eights on the golf course with cars between 10 p.m. and 3 a.m. Ken DeMott, general manager, said there's a safety issue involved. "The car can flip," he explained. "We don't want to see anyone hurt." The course has security personnel, but DeMott is seeking more help from the association and residents. He said, "We have a good Crime Watch system in place and I want to give them the opportunity to get the reward." Residents are meeting at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Lakewood United Church of Christ, 2601 54th Ave. S. It's the second public meeting about traffic-calming improvements. Speeding continues to plague the area. Stop signs are being installed soon. "We had a few near-misses with kids walking home from school," said Ed Van, association president. "We just hope they (drivers) don't just stop and speed up again." Alhambra Way S and 46th Avenue S are trouble spots. The group has more than 300 paid members. Van said they've worked several months to get a mail drop box installed on 54th Avenue S in front of Casa Blanca Apartments. He said all permissions are in place but the post office person they were dealing with is no longer there. * * *SHORE ACRES: Despite a typographical error in the newsletter saying the meeting at 7:30 p.m. Monday is in November, it's in February. Capt. Robert Bellou from the Shore Acres fire station will talk about the life support system and give an update on station renovations. A fire engine will be on display. * * *GREATER WOODLAWN: More than 40 personalized bricks have been sold for the walkway within a roundabout being installed at 12th Street and 26th Avenue N. Construction is scheduled for March. Residents will meet at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at Woodlawn Presbyterian Church, 2612 12th St. N. * * *EUCLID HEIGHTS: Charles Schuh, estate attorney, will discuss the importance of being prepared when he appears at Tuesday's 7 p.m. association meeting at First Alliance Church, 5000 10th St. N. Residents are getting signatures on petitions to approve proposed traffic-calming devices. * * *COQUINA KEY: In previous years, the association struggled to find new leaders. It currently has no president. That's changing. Two candidates are running for president and eight are vying for five board positions. Only association members can vote the one ballot per household. The election meeting is at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at Coquina Key Clubhouse, 3850 Pompano Drive SE. Absentee ballots can be delivered to the clubhouse until 5 p.m. election day. © St. Petersburg Times.
