Hernando in briefBy Times staff reports © St. Petersburg Times, published February 20, 2001 Events celebrate different culturesThe city of Brooksville Parks and Recreation Department will sponsor Culture Nights on the following dates: Friday, Black History Month; Irish, St. Patrick's Day, March 30; Italian Night, April 27. The game-recreation room will be open for youth and their parents, grandparents and friends. Snack and soda machines are at the site. There will be movies, poetry readings, sports/famous athlete quizzes, games, crosswords, word search puzzles, ethnic food, music, art and more. Adults $1, youth admitted free. Doo Wop Dance Night rescheduled for SaturdayThe Doo Wop Dance Night at the city of Brooksville Parks and Recreation Department has been rescheduled for 7 to 11 p.m. Saturday. The dance will feature '50s music with live entertainment and hot rods. Participants may come dressed in '50s clothes. Proceeds benefit the "Friends of the Children" program for all the youth in the community. Tickets are $5, advance tickets are available. Experts will appraise antiques, collectiblesThe Pasco County Library System and the Friends of the Hudson Library will have an antiques and collectibles fair from 9 a.m. to noon March 3 at the Hudson Regional Library, 8012 Library Road, Hudson. There will be consultants, including Tampa Bay area professional dealers and knowledgeable collectors to help participants learn more about antiques and collectibles. The public is invited to bring up to five easily carried objects and learn about them for only $3 each. Tickets can be bought at the Hudson Library beginning today or at the door the day of the event. Participants may bring glass, pottery, porcelain, china, estate and found jewelry, art glass, sculpture, prints, vintage toys, action figures, older dolls, toy trains, clocks, books, oil paintings and fine art, coins, paper money, lamps and more. Rotary Club rummage sale will benefit youngstersThe Rotary Club of Spring Hill will hold a rummage sale from 8 a.m. to noon Feb. 24, at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church on Deltona Boulevard, Spring Hill. The sale will benefit the youth of Hernando County in the form of scholarships, athletic team sponsorships and leadership training. For information, call 597-8777. Program features portrayal of folkloristPoet, performance artist and instructor Phyllis McEwen goes back to 1938 and portrays Zora Neale Hurtston, one of the most celebrated writers and folklorists of this country, at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at the Moton Early Intervention Center.
