NEW PORT RICHEY -- Michele Spina and Laura Helt (Citrus) combined for 30 wins last year and Pasco-Hernando Community College coach Tom Ryan said those pitchers were vital to the softball team's success.

It didn't take long for Spina and Helt to prove how important they are to the Conquistadors' quest for a fifth consecutive state tournament berth.

On Feb. 15, the right-handers threw back-to-back shutouts in helping PHCC even its record at 5-5.

"Everybody recognizes that Michele and Laura are going to be our two big guns," said Ryan, adding that the shutouts "keep everybody's spirits up."

Spina (3-2) tossed a one-hitter and hit an RBI triple that scored Kristin Turner (who walked in the third inning) in a 1-0 win against St. John's River Community College in the first game of a doubleheader.

In the nightcap, Helt (2-3) struck out five and held St. John's to three hits in a 2-0 win. Amanda Bradley's two-run single in the first inning accounted for the only runs.

Saint Leo's softball pitchers had nearly identical performances as Spina and Helt on Sunday.

Lacey Hardesty threw a three-hitter with nine strikeouts in the Lions' 16-0 win against Edward Waters College. In the second game of the doubleheader, Desiree Croteau fanned 11 and allowed just one hit in a 22-0 win that lifted the Lions to 6-0.

LOSING STREAK: PHCC's baseball team entered Monday's game against Lake Sumter CC at Leesburg with a 5-5 record. The Conquistadors, who started 5-1, had lost four in a row entering the contest. PHCC blew a five-run lead in its latest defeat, 9-8 Sunday against Lake City CC.

ALL EVEN: The Saint Leo baseball team evened its record at 8-8 with Sunday's 11-1 rout of Browton Parker College.

Lions pitcher Josh Neitz struck out seven and allowed four hits to improve to 2-3.

Trevor Hall, who already has been named Sunshine State Conference Player of the Week once this year, drove in five runs and Matt Krot hit a solo home run for Saint Leo.

LION HOOPS: The Saint Leo men's basketball team is gearing up for the Sunshine State Conference tournament by getting hot at the right time.

The Lions won three of four games to even their record at 12-12, 5-7 in the conference with a 71-68 win against Eckerd on Feb. 14.

James Turner led the Lions with 20 points in that game and forward Gary Downing had 19. D'Maija Stewart came off the bench to add 11.

Three Lions seniors -- Downing, Turner and Daniel Palmer -- were honored before that game.

The Saint Leo women's basketball team lost 70-67 to Eckerd on Feb. 14.

Ebony Winn had 25 points and 12 rebounds with Ashley Storm and Angela Sclafini each adding 10.
