Andrews stays put at FSU
Mickey Andrews, the architect of Florida State's defense for 17 seasons, decided Monday to pass on a chance to join the NFL's Tennessee Titans as defensive backs coach.
Andrews interviewed with Titans coach Jeff Fischer on Friday in Nashville.
"It was a very difficult decision that took a lot of soul searching by (wife) Diane and myself," Andrews said in a statement. "The opportunity to coach with the Tennessee Titans was an exceptional one. I was impressed with their entire organization. ... When it came down to it, you have to go where your heart tells you to go."
During the past eight seasons, the Seminoles have finished in the top 10 in at least three of the major defensive categories (total yards, rushing yards, pass efficiency defense and scoring defense) six times.
MORE FOOTBALL: North Carolina State linebacker Corey Lyons was charged with domestic violence while awaiting trial on a charge from last year of assaulting his girlfriend. Police in Raleigh, N.C., said Lyons grabbed a 21-year-old woman's arm Saturday and threatened to hurt her. ... Jon Warga, who led all college players in rushing in 1990, died at 31 of a heart attack in Skippack, Pa. Warga had 1,836 yards his senior season at Wittenberg (Ohio).
GOLF: Fred Gibson of the Senior PGA Tour; Joe Hodge, head pro at Lone Palms Golf Club in Lakeland; and amateurs Chris Bush, Paul Felder, Dave McCarney and Steve Pons teamed to win the Eckerd Pro-Am Classic. The team shot 55 at Bardmoor. Each team was made up of a Senior PGA Tour pro, a club pro and four amateurs. In a separate competition at the Bayou Club, senior PGA pro Don Massengale and Feather Sound head pro Andy Crowe joined amateur partners Joe Kuhn, Denis Longpre, Greg Navalance and Tom Walters to win with 57. The amateurs played 18 holes of scramble format and were joined by a senior pro for nine holes.
COLLEGES: Florida State sophomore second baseman Brandi Stuart, who hit .500 (6-of-12) with 2 home runs and 6 RBI in leading her team to the Sunshine State Tournament title, was named ACC softball player of the week. ... Eckerd junior Andre Gonzalez was named Sunshine State Conference baseball pitcher of the week. ... Florida led the UNF Mercedes-Benz Collegiate men's golf event after two rounds.
TENNIS: No. 6 seed Dominik Hrbaty beat Thomas Johansson 6-3, 6-4 in the ABN AMRO tournament at Rotterdam, Netherlands. ... Justin Gimelstob, on the losing doubles team when the United States fell to Switzerland this month in the Davis Cup, lost to George Bastl, who played on the Swiss team, 1-6, 7-6 (7-4), 6-2 at the St. Jude tournament in Memphis, Tenn. ... Qualifier Sandra Cacic of Bradenton upset fourth-seeded Amy Frazier 6-1, 3-6, 7-6 (7-3) at the IGA U.S. Indoor Championships in Oklahoma City. ... Iva Majoli, down 4-0, quit because of rib pain in a match with Joanette Kruger at the Dubai (United Arab Emirates) Open. ... Martina Hingis, who won the Qatar Open final Sunday, is ranked No. 1 for the 178th week, tying Monica Seles for fourth all time. Steffi Graf (378) holds the record. ... Andre Agassi, idle since winning the Australian Open, stayed No. 1 in the ATP champions race.
SOCCER: Tampa Bay midfielder Eric Quill was scheduled for exploratory right ankle surgery Monday. He was expected to be out at least 10 days. He sprained the ankle in a Feb. 10 exhibition against Miami. ... Eric Wynalda agreed to a deal with Major League Soccer and will return to New England.
BOWLING: Joe Norris, 93, who organized the first of the fabled "beer teams" in the 1930s, died of complications from pneumonia in San Diego.
BOXING: Shelly Finkel, Mike Tyson's adviser, said a fight between heavyweight champ Lennox Lewis and Hasim Rahman in South Africa on April 21 is to be announced today, reducing the chance of a Tyson-Lewis fight.
