Local community raises money for India earthquake survivorsBy Times staff writer © St. Petersburg Times, published February 21, 2001 CRYSTAL RIVER -- Local Indian-American residents have continued collecting money to help earthquake survivors in their native land. "If people are interested, they can still contact us," said Chandra Patel, owner of Champs Software in Crystal River. At this point, cash is needed more than supplies or clothing, Patel said. Donors should make checks payable to AAPI Charitable Trust -- India Earthquake. They may drop the checks at Patel's office in Meadowcrest; the mailing address is 1255 N Vantage Point Drive, Crystal River, FL 34429. Patel said donors also may drop checks off with Indian-American doctors in Citrus, particularly Dr. Vikram Shah, Citrus Pulmonary Consultants, Citrus Medical Center, 5616 W Norvell Bryant Highway (County Road 486), Crystal River; and Dr. Rajendra Bellam, Bellam Medical Clinic, 11707 N Williams St., Dunnellon. The earthquake, India's worst in 50 years, struck Jan. 26. Many members of the local Indian-American community have roots in the Gujarat state, which was among the hardest-hit areas. "We are very fortunate. None of us lost anyone," Patel said. The American Red Cross International Response Fund also is collecting money. Contributions may be sent to the local office (7449 W Gulf to Lake Highway, Crystal River, FL 34429) or to American Red Cross, P.O. Box 37243, Washington, D.C. 20013. © 2006 • All Rights Reserved • St. Petersburg Times
