Fire near Citrus Park mall burns 100 acres of brush
By Times staff writer © St. Petersburg Times, published February 21, 2001 TAMPA -- Citrus Park Town Center shoppers got a close-up look at the kind of brush fire that has been plaguing central Florida this month. Fire raced through a wooded ravine just north of the mall Tuesday afternoon, and shoppers gawked as flames reaching 30 feet into the trees approached the mall's three-story parking garage before being contained. Tampa Fire Rescue District Chief Charles Brown said about 100 acres of Tampa Electric Co. land burned, but neither the mall nor nearby homes were threatened. Citrus Park Town Center general manager Jeff Berger said the fire initially was seen on mall security cameras in the parking lot. Berger said evacuating the mall was not considered, but workers cleared out shoppers who had left their cars in the parking garage. "We were a little bit concerned, but the Fire Department did an outstanding job getting it under control," Berger said. The fire, which started about 3:30 p.m. and was contained about 90 minutes later, swirled in an area north of the mall, east of the Colonial Grant at Citrus Park apartment complex on Sheldon Road, and south of the Citrus Point subdivision on Ehrlich Road. Fire officials had not determined a cause for the blaze.
