Gunman robs bank on Cleveland Street

CLEARWATER -- An armed man robbed a Clearwater bank Tuesday afternoon, police reported. The man walked into Huntington National Bank, 2150 Cleveland St., about 3:27 p.m. and brandished a handgun. He left with an undetermined amount of money. He possibly left in a green van with wood trim, said police spokesman Wayne Shelor. The gunman was a white man in his early 40s who had a heavily tanned complexion, receding hairline and a beard, Shelor said. He was wearing a gray shirt and gray shorts. Nobody was hurt.

2 vehicles in the fountain snarl roundabout traffic

CLEARWATER -- A two-vehicle crash at the roundabout in Clearwater Beach snarled traffic for nearly two hours Tuesday as police had to summon an oversized tow truck to pull a 35-foot box truck from the fountain. The truck got stuck in the fountain about 10:44 a.m., when the driver of a four-door Toyota cut the truck driver off, said police spokesman Wayne Shelor. The Toyota struck the right front tire of the truck and the two vehicles locked up and went up the fountain steps. The driver of the Toyota was able to get the vehicle loose, but the truck was stuck. No one was injured and the fountain sustained minor damage, Shelor said. After the tow truck pulled the truck out of the fountain, all lanes were reopened at 12:37 p.m., Shelor said. The driver of the Toyota was cited for careless driving, Shelor said. Names of the drivers were not available.
