Rotation to work out

TAMPA -- The Yankees' second full-squad workout today should provide a glimpse of what could be baseball's best starting rotation. Roger Clemens, Andy Pettitte, Orlando Hernandez and Mike Mussina are expected to throw live batting practice for the first time.

Mussina has not been running because of a minor calf problem, but he has not missed any scheduled throwing sessions.

Dwight Gooden, one of several candidates for the No. 5 starting job, also is scheduled to throw.

The Yankees take the field at 10 a.m. at Legends Field.

THE BIG STARS TURN OUT: Actor George Clooney, in the Tampa Bay area for the filming of the movie Ocean's Eleven, watched practice Wednesday. He had praise for shortstop Derek Jeter.

"He's the biggest star in the world, isn't he?" Clooney said. "He does everything right."

PROSPECT SICK: First base prospect Nick Johnson is believed to have chickenpox and will be sidelined several days. The potential heir to the spot held by Tampa's Tino Martinez missed last season with a hand injury.

REINFORCEMENTS: The list of special instructors grew when Goose Gossage, Don Mattingly, Clete Boyer and Graig Nettles arrived at camp.

BRIEFLY: The Yankees have sold out 15 of their 19 spring training home games. ... Designated hitter David Justice was excused to handle a personal matter. He will work out today. ... Non-roster invitee pitcher Scott Kamieniecki will be sidelined at least 7-10 days by a back injury. -- MARK DIDTLER
