Woodruff upsets Sampras in two sets

Top-seeded Pete Sampras lost to Chris Woodruff 7-6 (7-4), 6-2 Wednesday night in his first match at the Kroger St. Jude tennis tournament in Memphis, Tenn.

Woodruff took control early in the second set. Sampras failed to score a point until the set's third game. Woodruff broke again in the seventh for a 5-2 lead.

"He was coming up with some great returns and seeing the ball great," Sampras said. "I was kind of caught off guard."

Sampras said he felt fine but needs to play more.

"Unfortunately, the year's been a little frustrating," Sampras said.

MORE TENNIS: Arantxa Sanchez Vicario was upset at the $565,000 Dubai (United Arab Emirates) Open, 6-3, 5-7, 6-3 to 16-year-old Lina Krasnoroutskaya. Top-seeded Martina Hingis routed 12th-seeded Joanette Kruger 6-2, 6-1. ... Tim Henman survived qualifier Jens Knippschild 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 in the $750,000 ABN AMRO indoor tournament in Rotterdam, Netherlands. Unseeded Vladimir Voltchkov upset No. 6 Dominik Hrbaty 6-2, 1-6, 7-6 (7-2).

BOXING: World heavyweight champion Lennox Lewis said he would fight Mike Tyson in June if HBO gets the U.S. broadcast rights. Lewis has a contract for his bouts to be shown in the U.S. by HBO, while Tyson has an agreement with Showtime. Lewis would agree to his opponent's demand of half the purse if Tyson compensates Showtime out of his paycheck. Tyson's manager Shelly Finkel was unavailable to comment. ... Ex-heavyweight champion Riddick Bowe, 33, is in jail on charges he violated probation after pleading guilty to abducting his wife. A bail hearing is scheduled for Friday. The warrant said he violated terms of his probation stemming from his guilty plea last year to abducting his wife, Judy, in February 1998.

BASKETBALL: The ThunderDawgs traded Ndongo Ndiaye, a 7-2 center, to the Detroit Dogs for second-round pick next year. Also, Pete Mickeal was put on injured reserve and ex-Gator Dametri Hill was waived.

SOCCER: Colombian midfielder Pedro Alvarez has joined the N.Y.-N.J. MetroStars and is expected to sign a contract with MLS. ... Eight-time winner Real Madrid and 1975 runner-up Leeds United made the European Champions Cup quarterfinals. OLYMPICS: The torch for next year's Winter Games in Salt Lake City was unveiled in Washington. Its conical shape has fluting to represent water. The five Olympic rings are part of the design. ... Fans are being frustrated by busy signals when they call operators with final ticket requests. They dialed (800) TICKETS about 570,000 times, but completed only 1,600 ticket orders throughout Tuesday. Only 50 operators were taking the calls and organizers could only encourage them to keep hitting the redial button.

COLLEGE BASEBALL: Winthrop completed a series sweep of host Florida 14-5. Starter Jimmy Ramshaw gave up four runs in the first and took the loss.

COLLEGE SOFTBALL: FSU second baseman Brandi Stuart was named NFCA Division I player of the week. She hit two homers, drove in six runs and hit .500 as the Seminoles went 5-0.

TRACK AND FIELD: Javier Sotomayor won the high jump at an indoor meet in Athens, Greece. He cleared 7-7.
