Exploring life's origins

Geologists tell us that millions of years ago, all the land masses of the world were united into one super-continent called Pangea. The name is the inspiration for and the title of John Gurbacs' oil painting now on exhibit at New Heights Gallery in Tampa. Through his art, Gurbacs explores the similarities and contrasts between forms in nature, as evidenced by anemones of both earth (plants) and sea (animals), shown here. The work encourages the viewer to contemplate the origins of life. New Heights Gallery, owned by glass and metal artists Drew and Kirsi Smith, carries art that makes a trip to its off-the-beaten-path location at 6310 N Nebraska Ave. worthwhile. The Smiths will hold a reception for Gurbacs from 3 to 9 p.m. March 3. The show continues through March 10 during gallery hours, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday. Free; (813) 234-9758.
