Tips to get the best buys
New to secondhand shopping? Here are a few tips from the pros:
Arrive when the sale opens to get the best selections, and please honor advertisements that say: "No early birds."
Many prices are negotiable. Be respectful, and ask: "Can you do better on the price?"
Large flea markets and swap meets may require lots of walking in variable conditions. Take a hat, sunscreen, even a small towel if you'll be outdoors for a while; wear comfortable shoes and dress in layers.
Though some venues may offer food and drink, it's a good idea to take along fruit, a sandwich and a jug of water. Many sellers accept personal checks and credit cards; however, wise bargain shoppers know to carry lots of $1 bills and coins.
