INVERNESS -- Property Appraiser Ron Schultz has announced that the deadline to apply for a homestead exemption is March 1. If you are a new permanent Florida resident and moved into your home on or before Jan. 1, you may apply for homestead exemption. This also applies for previously exempted Florida residents that moved into a new home in the year 2000. The Inverness and Crystal River property appraisers' offices will be open Feb. 28 and March 1 until 7 p.m. for those who have not applied for 2001 homestead exemption.

To be eligible for a homestead exemption, you must own the property and be a Florida resident who was living in the home on Jan. 1. Proof of Florida residency may include: Florida driver's license, Citrus County voter registration and Florida auto tags. Your deed or tax notice will serve as proof of ownership.

Each owner must provide his or her Social Security number as well as proof of residency.

For information, call the Inverness office at 341-6600 or the Crystal River office at 795-7725.
