NEW PORT RICHEY -- A 42-year-old man was charged with grand theft after Pasco County sheriff's deputies said he stole $8,861 from a safe in the supermarket that he manages.

Howard Wayne Pickrel of 4107 Bolder Drive, New Port Richey, was the manager of the Winn-Dixie on 6033 State Road 54, deputies said. He took the money out of the safe at 12:30 a.m. Feb. 14, a report said.

Pickrel was arrested Wednesday and released that night from the county jail in Land O'Lakes on $5,000 bail.

Street assessment questions to be answered

NEW PORT RICHEY -- All property owners affected by New Port Richey's proposed street assessment program will have a chance to address city staff members at an informational meeting at 6 p.m. Tuesday. The meeting will be held in City Hall at 5919 Main St. Any specific questions can be forwarded to the city manager's office before then. The meeting is not a City Council meeting, and no formal action will be taken. The City Council will consider whether to approve the street assessment program at its March 6 meeting, to be held at 7:30 p.m. at City Hall.
