HUDSON -- River Ridge's Jennifer Brumbaugh fired a three-hit shutout and was handed an early lead, but never could relax Thursday in her 3-0 win over Hudson.

The Cobras struggled right down the last batter, as the tying run was at the plate when the game finally ended. Some lackluster baserunning cost Hudson a chance to tie or go ahead in the third inning. With Supriya Kumar at third and Jenny Hobbs at second, Sneha Kumar bunted for a single. Her sister held but Hobbs tried to advance, and was thrown out going back to second.

Brumbaugh got out of each jam and ran her team's record to 4-1 while Hudson fell to 1-3.

"Jen was moving the ball around a lot and they weren't getting a lot of good bats on it," River Ridge coach Ernie Beck said.

Shortstop Christine Beck led the way offensively for the Royal Knights, going 2-for-4 with an RBI. Catcher Meghan Beach and third baseman Jill Hrovoski each had a couple of hits.

Although four players, including pitcher Supriya Kumar, weren't feeling well, Hudson coach Linda McQuade was pleased with her team's effort.

"I thought they played a pretty good game," she said. "We hit the ball a little better, made contact."

Beach scored the only run Brumbaugh would need in the first when she reached on a fielder's choice, stole second, and scored on two passed balls.

Hudson's defense kept River Ridge in check during the next two innings until second baseman Stefanie Simon led off the fourth with a base hit. Kumar retired the next two batters before Petrella lined a hit to right field to drive in Simon. Kumar struck out the next batter swinging.

The Royal Knights bumped up their lead to three in the top of the fifth as left fielder Amy Cassell led off with a single then stole her way to third before Hudson got the next two outs. Beck then drove her in with a ground ball to the shortstop.
