LOSE THE WAX: If your silver candlesticks are covered with melted candlewax, here are two ways to remove it. If candlesticks are weighted, warm the wax with a hair dryer and wipe it off with a paper towel. If they aren't weighted and the bottom is open, put in the freezer for about 15 minutes. Then pop the wax off.

IN AND OUT: Some people use motion detectors to warn when someone is trying to get in. But American Technologies' Safety Beam is designed to let you know when someone is trying to get out, whether the dog from the yard or the kids from their rooms. The beam consists of a transmitter and a receiver that are small enough to be held in your hand. Each unit operates on three AA batteries or an AC adapter. They can be permanently mounted in any area and are self-aligning. Here's how they work: An infrared beam is created between the transmitter and receiver up to 75 feet. When the beam is crossed, a high-volume alarm sounds. The basic unit retails for $29.95. There are more sophisticated versions for garage and office use. Information: (702) 368-4573.

DEEP PURPLE: Shades of purple and violet in a room can soothe and stimulate at the same time. Because violet is relaxing, it's a good choice for use in a bedroom setting. Purple is often favored by artists, designers and musicians because it is believed to encourage creativity.
